Squad Responds To Multiple Daytime Calls (5/26/2002)

This past Friday, both on-duty and off-duty volunteers responded to handle 3 simultaneous emergency medical calls in Summit. All 3 squad ambulances were pressed into action.

The duty crew was on the scene assisting an individual with a foot injury at the Summit Hospital (formerly Fair Oaks) when a call was received for a local resident experiencing difficulty breathing. 2 off-duty members responded to that incident with the squad's 2nd ambulance. Within a few minutes, another request was received to respond to the Senior Citizen Housing complex on Chestnut Ave. for a fall victim. Two additional off duty squad members responded to cover that call. All 3 patients were transported to Overlook Hospital.

According to Squad President John Staunton, "We are fortunate that several squad members work locally and that their employers are supportive when the members respond to staff backup crews. Thankfully, this does not happen often, but when it does, it is nice to know that these businesses can be flexible. This type of civic support is very much appreciated." Among the off duty members that responded were employees of Vickery & Company and H. G. Edwards & Company, Inc.

The Summit First Aid Squad is launching a new membership campaign for 2002. Their call to "Answer The Call" follows on the appeal for volunteerism from President Bush. The Squad is always looking for new volunteers and provides all needed training and equipment. For information, please call 908-277-9479, or visit them on the Internet at www.summitems.org.
