First Aid Squad Receives United Way Award (6/3/2002)

The Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad was recently recognized by the United Way of Summit, New Providence and Berkeley Heights for its response following the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The United Way normally acknowledges individuals for their contributions, however due to the extraordinary events on 9/11 and immediately after, a decision was made to recognize the First Aid Squads, Fire and Police Departments from the 3 towns. The Squad received a Congressional citation as well as a US flag that had been flown over the Capitol Building in Washington, DC courtesy of Congressman Mike Ferguson and Senator Jon Corzine.

Squad Captain Beverly Brown, who accepted the awards on behalf of the squad, stated "It is quite an honor to receive these awards. The events of 9/11 brought out the best in our volunteer squad members, many of whom responded to the World Trade Center site. We are lucky to have such dedicated individuals."

The United Way's Edward H. Kaus Youth Award was also given to one of the members of the Summit Squad. Bob Koernig, a high school senior at Summit High School, has been with the Squad for well over 2 years and is a state certified EMT, CPR instructor, and Water Safety instructor. In addition to the Squad, his volunteer work includes activities with the Red Cross and the United Methodist Church of Summit.

According to John Staunton, Squad President, "Bob has been one of the leaders of our corps of junior members. He is a great asset to the Squad, and will be missed when he leaves for Gettysburg College in August. I understand that he has already applied for membership on the Gettysburg squad, so his skills will remain sharp."

High school students are eligible for squad membership once they are 16 years old. Many current senior members, including Mrs. Brown, began their squad careers as junior members while in high school.

The First Aid Squad remains ready to answer the call and is always looking for new volunteers. All needed training and equipment is provided. For information, please call 908-277-9479, or visit them on the Internet at www.summitems.org.
