'Tis the season… for Ambulance Calls (December 29, 2000)

The volunteers at the Summit First Aid Squad traditionally see an increase in the number of emergency calls during the holiday season and on Wednesday that tradition continued. Squad members answered 13 calls between 8:00 AM and 8:00 P.M. that day; about 4 times what a normal Wednesday would bring. The day began at 9:45 AM with a call for help from a Summit resident who sustained a hip injury after a fall in her home. After that, according to Craig Flinn Squad Vice President and acting Crew Chief, "we got little rest". At 3 points during the day, off duty members were called in to staff a second ambulance and respond to simultaneous calls.

The most significant incident of the day was an auto accident at Bryant Park on Springfield Ave. A car left the road overturned and landed on it's roof in Bryant Pond. Initial reports had 3 people trapped inside, which prompted the squad to respond with 2 ambulances and 10 members. Squad member Mike D'Ecclessis, who lives nearby, was the first to arrive on the scene. He was quite relieved to discover that the car was sitting in very shallow water and had only one occupant who sustained only minor injuries. The Summit Fire Department also responded, as did a Paramedic Unit from Overlook Hospital. Firefighters assisted Squad members in removing the driver from his car. Squad volunteers then moved him to their ambulance for treatment and transport to Overlook Hospital. Another newspaper had erroneously reported exposure injuries to 5 firefighters. Both First Aid Squad and Fire Department officers confirmed that the accident resulted in only 1 injury.

While returning from the Bryant Park incident, a Fire Department engine company discovered a pedestrian struck by a car at Broad St. and Summit Avenue. Summit Squad 2 was just a block away and on the scene within a minute. Squad volunteers transported that patient to Overlook Hospital.

Other calls during the busy Wednesday included an out-of-town assistance call to the Short Hills Hilton for an injured maintenance worker, 3 medical emergencies in patients homes, 2 emergencies at the Summit Medical Group and 2 non-emergency transportations.
