Summit First Aid Squad Responds to NYC During Blackout (9/2/2003)

The Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad responded to New York City to assist with emergency medical aid calls during the blackout in August. 2 Squad members joined volunteers from 25 other area towns in providing ambulance coverage for specified regions of the city.

Squad President Ken Herr was one of the members that responded. According to Mr. Herr, he received a call from the Squad's dispatch agency at about 2:30 AM requesting that a Summit ambulance take part in a district mobilization. Mr. Herr called Bernie DeGuzman, one of his crew members, and they met the other district squads in Hoboken. From there the squads drove through the Holland Tunnel and received their assignments. The Summit crew was issued a radio to receive their calls, and a NYC police officer rode with the crew for the duration of their assignment.

The Squad is always looking for new volunteers and provides all needed training and equipment. For information, please call 908-277-9479, or visit them on the Internet at www.summitems.org
