Extending the Thanksgiving Day Family Tradition (11/27/2007)

For the last several years, Mark Koernig and his son Bob of the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad have covered a portion of the Thanksgiving Day daytime shift responding to medical emergencies in Summit. Neighbors have become accustomed to seeing the ambulance parked in the Koernig's driveway. Taking the ambulance home allows them to enjoy the company of family and friends, while also ensuring coverage for the city. Joining them this year is Emily Koernig, a new addition to the Junior Member program at the Squad.

As with most major holidays, the regular daytime shifts at the Squad are handled via a sign-up process. Also on hand Thanksgiving Day were Carl Lohmann, Chris Johnston, Jane James, and Edwin Abrew. Squad Captain Kari Phair stated, "We appreciate the dedication of these members and their families during the holidays. By splitting the shift we try to limit the impact on family time while also maintaining our 24 hour a day service."

The Squad is always looking for new volunteers and provides all needed training and equipment. For more information, please visit the Squad's web site at www.summitems.org, or call 908-277-9479.
