September is Summit First Aid Squad Month (9/4/2008)

At the September 3 meeting of Summit Common Council, Mayor Jordan Glatt issued a Proclamation designating September as "Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad Month". Mayor Glatt recognized the 46 years of "public service to our community in support of health and safety" by the all volunteer First Aid Squad. He expressed admiration of the squad's ability to provide such services at no charge for so long and encouraged the public to support the First Aid Squad's private fund raising efforts.

Mayor Glatt presented a copy of the Proclamation to First Aid Squad President John Staunton who thanked the Mayor, Council and community for their support over the years. "On behalf of our 87 active volunteers and the hundreds whom we serve each year thank you for your continued support" said Mr. Staunton.

The First Aid Squad launches its annual find drive next week. Squad volunteers answered nearly 2,100 calls for help last year and since 1962 neither their patients nor the taxpayer has ever received a bill. "With the continued generosity of the Summit community, we plan to keep it that way for many years to come" said Mr. Staunton.

Both the Mayor and Mr. Staunton also made a quick pitch for more volunteers. "We're fortunate to have many qualified and dedicated volunteers, but are always looking to add to our ranks", said Mr. Staunton. The Squad provides all needed training, uniforms and equipment for its members. For information, please call 908-277-9479, or visit their web site at www.summitems.org.
