Summit Squad Responds to Millburn Fire (1/12/2010)

The building fire in downtown Millburn on Sunday required over 100 firefighters from several neighboring fire departments. On scene to care for those firefighters were members of the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad's Fire Rehab team. At 12:06 PM, the First Aid Squad received a request from Millburn for the rehab unit to respond to the fire scene. 4 off-duty members answered that call, bringing Summit's EMS First response truck and Special Operations trailer. They quickly set up a rehab and treatment area on Millburn Ave about 100 yards from the fire building. The rehab station includes a portable shelter with propane heater, equipment for medical evaluation and treatment, including oxygen and what firefighters need most: drinking water. The Millburn-Short Hills First Aid Squad had 2 ambulances on scene and it's members delivered hot chocolate and coffee provided by the Red Cross.

Shortly after the station was set up, it's first customers arrived; a crew of Millburn firefighters who had performed the initial interior attack. All received a full medical evaluation and 1 was given oxygen. The Squad's team remained on scene for 4 hours. Squad Crew Chief John Staunton was accompanied by Lt. Jane Mahoney and EMTs Kyle Mahoney and Mike Montero.

According to Squad President Steve Mortenson, "We are always happy to assist our neighboring first aid squads and we know that when Summit needs help, they are more than happy to return the favor. That's why we call it mutual aid".

The Squad typically responds to working structure fires and hazardous materials incidents to provide on scene medical treatment and rehabilitation for the firefighters. The Summit First Aid Squad is part of a special task force that provides EMS coverage and rehab at major fire scenes throughout the county. Firefighting operations can be very stressful often resulting in rapid changes to blood pressure, heart, rate, respirations and body temperature. The rehab team monitors vitals signs, provides fluid replacement and ensures the responders are medically cleared to return to their duties.

The all volunteer First Aid Squad is always looking for new members to join its ranks. All needed training, uniforms and equipment is provided. For information, please call 908-277-9479, or visit their web site at www.summitems.org.
