5 Car Pile-Up Injures 4 (8/11/98)

A 5 car accident on route 24 in Summit last Tuesday evening resulted in four injuries and responses from several area agencies. At about 5:35 P.M. the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad received a report of the accident and dispatched it’s on-duty ambulance crew. The protocol for accidents on the highway calls for automatic dispatch of the Summit Fire Department who also sent an engine company. Additional off duty squad members also responded to assist. According to Summit First Aid Squad Crew Chief Beverly Dorl, who supervised the rescue operation, 9 Summit First Aid Squad volunteers responded with 3 ambulances. 4 patients were treated at the scene, and all were transported by ambulance to Overlook Hospital. None of the injuries were considered to be critical. A paramedic unit from Overlook Hospital also responded to assist with the treatment of 1 patient.

The Summit Police, State Police and Millburn Fire Department also responded. No vehicle rescue or fire services were needed, but members from both Fire Departments assisted squad members with patient removal to ambulances.
