The Tradition Continues (appeared in the Summit Observer 11/4/98)

Michael F. D’Ecclessis, pictured here with his father Mike, recently became the first 3rd generation member of the Summit First Aid Squad. Michael, 16, currently a sophomore at Summit High School is the Squad’s newest Junior member. His father was among the first class of junior members when the Squad established the junior program in 1970. Since that time Dad has served as Squad President twice and also helped start the Squad’s EMS Bike team in 1992, the first such team in the state.

Michael’s grandmother, Romayne D’Ecclessis was one of the charter members of the First Aid Squad when it was founded in 1962. She served as an active squad member for 2 years and also worked for the City of Summit as a meter officer for over 20 years, retiring in 1983.

Young Michael’s father and grandmother are not the only family members to have served the First Aid Squad. His mother, Margaret MacMahon D’Ecclessis was also a member for several years and met his father there. This is one of 14 marriages between squad members in the organization’s 37 year history. Margaret’s mother, Virginia MacMahon, brother Dan MacMahon and sister Mary MacMahon have all served as squad members as well.

It appears that the this family tradition may continue. Michael has a younger brother Matthew, now age 12, who is already planning to join in 4 years when he is old enough.
